A Celebration of Women's History Month

Great Works for violin and piano by Women Composers

March 16-18, 2025

Join us as we celebrate Women’s History Month with a powerful and lyrical program of fantastic pieces for violin and piano composed by women composers.  We will highlight three composers from around the world—Grażyna Bacewicz from Poland (1909-1969);  Dame Ethel Smyth, an early Suffragette from England (1858-1944); and Amy Beach from the USA (1867-1944).  All three fought to get their voices heard in a profession that many thought should be reserved for men and not one that women were capable of doing at all.  Hans von Bulow, the noted conductor, wrote in 1867, “I do not believe in the feminine form of the word ‘creator'” and George Upton in a book entitled Women and Music, wrote in 1880, “Not only are women too emotional and lacking in stamina to write music, but a woman’s mind simply cannot grasp the scientific logic of music making.”  All three of these women not only wrote beautiful, passionate, and well-crafted music, but all were also involved in helping the next generation of women gain even more access to the composing and profession and music in general.

Violinist Tim Schwarz (http://www.timothyschwarz.com/), who served with me as the 1996 U.S. Artistic Ambassadors of Music, will return to Asheville for this thrilling program.  Here is a video of Tim and I playing Amy Beach’s “Invocation” at the beautiful home of Dan Angerstein and Jerry Schultz in Hendersonville:
