“DEEP RIVER”
The Influence of African-American Spirituals

Soulful and energetic works for violin, cello, and piano by
Burleigh, Dvorak, Still, Coleridge-Taylor, Bonds, and more

February 20-25, 2024

Join us for another special program to help celebrate Black History Month.  This concert highlights the important influence of African-American Spirituals in classical chamber music.  We will perform works by Harry Burleigh and Clarence Cameron White, who were both excellent violinists and among the first to arrange Spirituals for string instruments.  Both men studied at the National Conservatory of Music, our first American Conservatory, which was directed by Antonin Dvorak.  The great Czech composer used these soulful tunes in his “New World Symphony” and also in a Violin Sonata that we will perform.  We will also perform fantastic works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, William Grant Still, and Margaret Bonds.  This is music filled with the pain and anguish of an oppressed people, but also powerful melodies, inspirational themes, and an exciting rhythmic drive. The wonderful Borowsky siblings—Emmanuel on violin and Frances on cello—are back to perform these sadly neglected, but very soulful works of music.

To get a flavor for this powerful and expressive music, please watch the beginning of this incredibly soulful arrangement of “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor by clicking on the link below:
