“THE SCHUMANNS”
A Love Story

A Four-Part Zoom course on the life and
music of Robert and Clara Schumann

March 24-April 21 2021

This four-part Zoom course will explore the lives of these two remarkable musicians who helped change the way we listen to and understand music through their composing, performing, and critical writing.  Their great love affair helped produce some incredibly beautiful and poignant music that exemplified the new Romantic spirit of the early 19th century.  Though Robert was haunted by mental illness and Clara burdened with the difficult duties as both breadwinner and mother of eight children, they not only created so much on their own, but also helped discover the young Johannes Brahms, who Clara would inspire throughout his life.

Over four weeks, we will follow young Robert as he escapes from law school to become a composer and writer about music and meets the amazing prodigy, Clara Wieck, who composed incredible works at age 15 only to largely give up composing upon marrying Robert in order to focus on her incredible talents as a world-class pianist.  Along the way, we will also meet Felix Mendelssohn, Frederic Chopin, and Franz Liszt, who all intersected with the Schumanns during this incredible time in Germany.

You can register below for the whole four-part course or you can also register for selected classes if you prefer.  All classes will be recorded so that I can always send you the recording if you cannot be at a particular class.
