Thiago Formiga, Violin

Brazilian violinist Thiago Formiga holds a BMus in violin from the Federal University of Paraíba with Professor Yerko Tabilo,  MM in Performance from Duquesne University with Professor Charles Stegeman, and a DMA from the University of Georgia with Professor Levon Ambartsumian.  Over the years, he has had the opportunity to experience a diverse career as soloist, chamber and orchestra musician, and pedagogue. During his Masters degree, he was concertmaster of the Duquesne Symphony Orchestra, first violin of the Frances De Broff Graduate Quartet, and prize winner of the DSO Concerto Competition. While in Pittsburgh, Mr. Formiga performed with the Wheeling Symphony, Westmoreland Symphony, Johnstown Symphony, and Altoona Symphony, as well as appearances with Classical Revolution Pittsburgh. In the summer of 2014, he attended Sunflower Music Festival in Topeka, Kansas, with the Fauré Piano Quartet. In 2014, Mr. Formiga was appointed Concertmaster of the Paraiba Symphony Orchestra, a position in which he held for 5 years. In 2015, he  joined one of Brazil’s most renowned string quintets: Quinteto da Paraíba. He also taught in a social music project for underprivileged children called Orquestra Criança Cidadã, and became the violin professor at the Federal Institute of Paraiba, teaching pre-college students. Mr. Formiga moved back to the United States in 2019 to pursue his Doctorate Degree. During that time he was concertmaster of the UGA Symphony Orchestra, first violin of the Hugh Hodgson String Quartet, and member of the ARCO Chamber Orchestra. Between 2020 and 2022, he was a violin instructor at the Atlanta Music Academy and at UGA Community Music School.  Currently, he is a member of the Greenville Symphony, and frequently performs with the Jacksonville Symphony, Savannah Philharmonic, Charleston Symphony, and Hilton Head Symphony.
